To improve the outside, we must sometimes work from the inside. Many recent studies have documented the positive effects of fatty acids on the skin, but groomers have long been aware of the benefits of fat in the diet.

There are multiple ways in which fatty acids work. Some provide the energy necessary for proper hair growth and skin turnover. Essential fatty acids, such as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, act directly to promote a healthy, shiny coat. Omega 3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation in the skin, while Omega 6 fatty acids are used in the synthesis of the natural oils of the skin. Supplementation with these fatty acids can help limit irritation and dryness of the dog's skin. A diet rich in essential fatty acids enhances the luster of the coat and reduces overall scale of the skin giving a healthy, clean appearance. Other organs that benefit essential fatty acids are the brain, eyes, and kidneys.

Choosing a diet with adequate fatty acid content will keep the coat healthy and provide the best defense from diseases. What better way to show off good grooming!
