The Shih Tzu is a breed of dog that descended from dogs that were members of the royal court of the emperor of China. Today, they hold a place of no less importance in the hearts of their owners. Many traits of the Shih Tzu lend themselves to nutritional support. Royal Canin Shih Tzu 24 addresses these issues.
Shih Tzus are most recognizable because of the hair coat. It has a long primary coat with a very thick undercoat. Maintenance of a coat such as this can require up to 30% of the daily protein requirement. Including protein that contains the sulfur amino acids is particularly important for the synthesis of keratin, one of the precursors of hair. To help maintain coat quality, Shih Tzu 24 contains highly-digestible protein. It also contains vitamin A and chelated zinc to produce shiny hair and reduce flakiness of the skin.
The skin is the body's main barrier against infection. For that reason, it is important to promote its function as a barrier to potential pathogens. Shih Tzus are commonly affected by atopy, which is an immune response to environmental allergens. Itching is a common sign of atopy, and the scratching that occurs can damage the skin. Secondary bacterial infections are the result. To reduce this occurrence, scientists at the Waltham Research Centre developed our "Skin Barrier" complex of four B vitamins and one amino acid that helps strengthen the barrier function of the skin. Shih Tzu 24 also contains omega fatty acids to reduce the inflammation associated with allergic skin disease, as well as limit dry skin.
The lifespan of the Shih Tzu can approach 17 years, with an average of 13.4 years. With such an increased lifespan, the mature Shih Tzu can encounter many age-related issues. Cataracts, heart disease, and osteoarthritis are frequently encountered. To help offset these problems, Shih Tzu 24 has been supplemented with antioxidants. It contains lutein, which helps preserve ocular function and taurine which can improve the contractility of the heart. Glucosamine and chondroitin are also included to promote healthy joints.
As is common in many small breeds, Shih Tzus are predisposed to dental problems. A study in the mid 1990s showed that dogs weighing less than 22 lbs. have dental problems earlier in life, and are more severely affected than larger dogs. We've added green tea polyphenols have a local antibacterial effect on the mouth to Shih Tzu 24. The kibble has a "brushing" effect that helps remove plaque, while the tartar is reduced by including a calcium chelator in the food.
Once a resident of the Imperial Palace in China, the Shih Tzu is now a resident of many American homes. With a beautiful coat, happy demeanor, and superior longevity, the breed makes a wonderful pet. Royal Canin is proud to produce a diet speci?cally for this popular dog.
