Equally comfortable as either a guard dog or a family pet, the English bulldog is truly a unique breed. From its distinct anatomical features to its wonderful personality, the bulldog possesses characteristics that make it a wonderful companion. To this end, Royal Canin has designed a formula that addresses some of the special needs of this breed.
The English bulldog has a stout, but compact build. Many bulldogs are also content with a minimum of activity. For these reasons, obesity can be a concern with this breed. The concerns of obesity in the bulldog go beyond those normally encountered with many other breeds.
In one study overweight dogs were found to have more respiratory problems. When this is coupled to the structure of the bulldog's airway, respiratory distress can be a significant issue. As many bulldog owners know, the breed is intolerant to heat. This intolerance is also compounded by obesity. To address obesity, Royal Canin has designed Bulldog 24 with reduced energy content and limited the fat intake. While not a "weight loss" formula, Bulldog 24 limits the risk of excessive weight gain.
With the bone structure of the English bulldog, it is imperative to promote healthy joints. Included in Bulldog 24 are glucosamine and chondroitin which can be incorporated into joint lubrication and cartilage. Additionally, omega 3 fatty acids are included to reduce inflammation that may occur in the joint.
For digestive sensitivities, the formula is designed with superior digestibility. Many bulldogs experience GI issues that are related to indigestibility of their diet. Bulldog 24 uses ingredients that provide the highest digestibility, as well as balancing the dietary fiber intake. By using chicken and soy protein isolate, only 2% of the protein content is indigestible. Rice is the sole carbohydrate source and is also highly digestible. A balance of soluble and insoluble fibers serves to promote proper digestive transit and nourish the cells of the GI tract. Stool volume decreases, while stool quality improves, as shown by a study on nutrient digestion. A secondary benefit to improved digestibility is reduced fecal odor.
The most recognizable characteristic of the breed is probably the facial structure. The shortened jaws can actually make picking up food a challenge. To address this, Bulldog 24 has a unique kibble shape to make it easier for the dog to grasp. Ten different shapes were tested to find the optimal kibble for the breed. The shape also helps slow down ingestion speed and encourages chewing. The kibble has a "brushing" effect to reduce dental plaque. To go along with this, an anti-tartar agent has been supplemented.
Many bulldogs have skin problems, especially in the areas that are wrinkled. The skin folds tend to hold moisture and heat, and research has demonstrated that this provides a favorable environment for infections from a variety of pathogens. Atopy (environmental allergies) commonly affects many breeds, and bulldogs may suffer from this as well. Bulldog 24 contains a unique blend of 4 vitamins and one amino acid that improve the barrier function of the skin. As mentioned earlier, omega fatty acids help reduce inflammation associated with skin disease.
With such a unique breed, we are presented with an opportunity to provide very specific nutrition. Bulldog 24 has a nutritional profile to help address common issues associated with this wonderful breed, while providing complete and balanced nutrition.
