Originally bred as hunter of badgers and other small game, the Dachshund has taken its place as one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States. A keen sense of smell, a con? dent demeanor, and a distinct body shape are hallmarks of this unique breed. Dachshunds exist in two sizes, three coat types, and many colors, making it a breed that is very diverse. Within this high level of diversity, there are some common characteristics that we can address nutritionally. Royal Canin has developed Dachshund 28 for this purpose.

Perhaps the most defining characteristic of the Dachshund is its body shape. The legs are shortened because the growth plates close prematurely. Increased stress is placed on the joints due to changes in confirmation that occur with this closure. The shorter legs also have less ability to absorb shocks, and more force gets transmitted through the joints of the vertebral column, generating compression on the disks. In order to help protect the joints, Dachshund 28 has added glucosamine and chondroitin to protect the dog's cartilage. To combat inflammation that may be present in the joints, increased levels of long chain omega fatty acids (EPA and DHA specifically) are present. These supplements serve to help keep the joints healthy.

In addition to the stress associated with the physical stature, obesity can contribute to increased risk of back problems. For the purpose of preventing obesity, Dachshund has suitable protein (28%) and reduced fat (14%) with the goal of reducing fat mass while preserving lean muscle mass. Incorporating L-carnitine helps utilize fat as an energy source. Conjugated linoleic acid has been shown to spare lean tissue at the expense of fat during calorie restriction.

Dachshunds are very long-lived dogs, which is another trait that makes them ideal as a pet. However, with age come the effects of oxidative stress on the body. Dental problems are also a common issue with the advancement of age. Royal Canin has incorporated a synergistic complex of antioxidants into Dachshund 28. These antioxidants serve to slow the effects of aging. Included in this complex are polyphenols from green tea. They have a two fold benefit, as they also have a local antibacterial effect in the mouth. This formula incorporates both chemical and mechanical reduction of plaque and tartar. A calcium chelator "traps" the calcium in the mouth so that it can not be incorporated into tartar formation, and then releases it into the digestive tract. Meanwhile, the kibble is longitudinally extruded to provide a "brushing" effect while chewing which reduces plaque.

Whether chasing small game into burrows or just chasing children around the yard, the Dachshund is a truly special breed. We are proud to present a food that is uniquely designed to provide superior nutrition especially for one of America's most beloved pets.
