The Yorkshire terrier is a unique breed for many reasons, but one of its most prominent characteristics is the coat. While it is beautiful, the hair must receive proper grooming and attention to maintain its health. Adequate nutrition will also contribute to overall coat quality.
The hair of the Yorkie is both straight and fine, giving it a texture similar to silk. In show champions, the hair can be over 14 inches long! This growth is possible because the coat of the Yorkie grows continuously without routine shedding. It is important to keep the hair brushed and cleaned as routine maintenance. In order to fuel this constant growth, the necessary amounts of high quality protein and fatty acids must also be provided.
Another unique feature is that the Yorkie has no protective undercoat. Therefore, it is critical that skin also be maintained as well. Essential fatty acids are important to reduce inflammation and promote healthy oil production for the skin.
While very attractive, the coat of the Yorkie requires exceptional care. Grooming and nutrition are a necessity for this breed. The reward is a look of distinction in which both owner and pet can take pride.
