Nicknamed the "Chrysanthemum dog," the Shih Tzu is immediately recognizable because of its unique coat. The long, dense hair is a hallmark of the breed. To keep this unique coat looking good, regular grooming and proper nutrition are necessary.

Frequent trips to the groomer are essential for the Shih Tzu. If the coat is left long, daily brushing helps prevent matting. Shorter cuts require less maintenance, but still benefit from routine trips to the groomer. Attention to the hair on the face is particularly important to avoid irritation of the eyes. Up to 30% of the Shih Tzu's daily protein requirement may be used for hair growth.

For this reason, it is important to provide the optimum amount of high-quality protein for these dogs. Omega fatty acids are important for reducing skin inflammation, and they are also essential to make the coat shiny and healthy. Vitamin A and chelated minerals (such as zinc, copper, iodine) are necessary for skin cell turnover.

To achieve the natural beauty of the coat, a diet fed to Shih Tzus should include all of these nutrients. Grooming and nutrition can work together to provide the Shih Tzu with a healthy coat for a breed that "blooms" with beauty.
