Many dogs suffer from allergic skin disease, showing signs such as itching, skin infections, or "hot spots." We typically think of going to the vet for drug therapy or topical sprays for treatment of these issues. We should also remember that proper grooming and nutrition pets can be important for improving skin and coat health.
With skin diseases, many times a poor-quality, matted coat results. In addition to treating the underlying skin disease, it is important to take the corrective action to return the coat to normal. A good groomer is invaluable for this part of the pet's treatment. The groomer can recommend the best shampoo regimen (frequency and type) for the pet's hair, as well as address any specific problem areas of the fur.
By providing the necessary nutrition during healing, we will see a benefit in recovery. The skin needs protein, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals to heal. Certain combinations of nutrients reduce inflammation as well as decrease healing time. Some allergic skin diseases benefit from diets with unique protein sources.
Always follow your vet's advice on the treatment of skin disease, but don't forget the roles of grooming and nutrition in healing.
