Variety. No word better describes the coat of Dachshunds. With three coat types (smooth, long, and rough) and many different colors (red, black and tan, and dapple), few breeds have the variation in coat type as the Dachshund.
No matter which type or color of hair the Dachshund may have, good nutrition and proper grooming are essential for coat health. Although all three coat types benefit from routine grooming, it is especially important for the rough and long coat Dachshunds. Some Dachshunds suffer from allergic skin diseases, so regular trips to the groomer can also reduce the occurrence of skin problems.
Nutrition can also help provide a beautiful, healthy coat. A diet that has adequate protein for hair growth should also be part of the strategy. Omega fatty acids are important for healthy skin and coat. However, care must be taken to limit total fat intake because obesity can predispose this breed to back problems. B vitamins are also necessary for hair growth and to promote the barrier function of the skin.
The diversity of the coat type adds to the uniqueness of this breed. Regardless of which coat type the Dachshund may have, grooming and nutrition can help to improve it.
