Environmental allergies (also known as “atopy”) are the second most common type of skin disease seen by veterinarians. Any dog can have allergies, but certain breeds such as Cairn Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Miniature Schnauzers, and Shar Peis are predisposed to it.

Atopy can cause signs such as itching, hair loss, skin infections, and chewing of the feet. In many cases, the exact allergen is unknown, and so removal is not possible. However, we can take steps to reduce the allergic response.

Routine grooming is important to overall skin health in dogs. Bathing, especially with medicated shampoos,

can also help with itching. Nutrition also plays a role. Omega fatty acids and other nutrients can help reduce the inflammatory response in allergies. As with grooming, a good base level of nutrition can also promote general skin health. A specifi c combination of B vitamins has been shown to improve the skin’s barrier function and reduce penetration by allergens.

Many dogs suffer from atopy. Although allergies aren’t “curable,” both good grooming and proper nutrition can be important parts of the therapeutic plan. Combine these with a treatment plan from your veterinarian, and you can help reduce the itching in your pet during this allergy season.
